रामनाथस्वामी · Where Rama worshipped Shiva

The shrine raised by Rama before the great war

Presiding deities: Lord Shiva as Ramanathaswamy — worshipped in two lingams: the Ramalingam fashioned from sand by Sita, and the Vishwalingam brought by Hanuman from Kailash. The Goddess is Parvatavardini.

ॐ नमः शिवाय रामनाथाय

Rameshwaram is revered as the eleventh Jyotirlinga and one of the four Char Dhams. On his way to Lanka to rescue Sita, Lord Rama wished to worship Shiva to atone for the brahma-hatya of slaying the brahmin Ravana. He sent Hanuman to bring a lingam from Kailash; when Hanuman was delayed, Sita fashioned a lingam from sand — the Ramalingam, worshipped to this day as the principal Jyotirlinga. The Kailash lingam (Vishwalingam) that Hanuman brought was also installed, and Rama ordained it be worshipped first. The full yatra-chakra — carrying Ganga water from Kashi to offer here, and carrying Rameshwaram sand back to immerse at Kashi — is considered a complete path to moksha.

History & heritage

A bridge from the Ramayana to the sea

Rameshwaram’s sanctity reaches back to the Ramayana itself: it was from the nearby shore that the Vanara army raised the Setu (Ram Setu / Adam’s Bridge) to Lanka, and here that Rama installed the lingam on his victorious return. The line of shoals still visible from Dhanushkodi towards Sri Lanka is venerated as that very bridge. For millennia the island has been a tirtha where the Shaiva and Vaishnava streams of devotion meet in one shrine.

The Ramanathaswamy temple as it stands was built largely by the Pandya dynasty from the 12th century, and expanded over four centuries by the Setupati rulers of Ramanathapuram — the temple’s traditional guardians — and the Nayak kings of Madurai. Their greatest gift is the third corridor (prakara): a colonnade of about 1,212 carved granite pillars, the eastern arm stretching some 197 metres, making it the longest temple corridor in the world. Grand gopurams rise on all four sides, and 22 theerthams within the walls give Rameshwaram its unique bathing pilgrimage.

Darshan & rituals

The 22 theerthams & the rhythm of the temple

A Rameshwaram pilgrimage begins with the snan in the 22 theerthams — first the sea at Agni Theertham, then the holy wells within the temple, each with a different taste and temperature, water poured over the devotee by temple attendants. The cleansed pilgrim then takes darshan of Ramanathaswamy and Parvatavardini.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Rameshwaram temple darshan timings?
The temple opens with the early Aarti around 5:00 AM; morning darshan runs 5:00 AM–1:00 PM and evening darshan 3:00 PM–9:00 PM, closing with the night Aarti around 9:00 PM. The early-morning Spadigam (crystal) lingam darshan is especially revered. Timings change on festival days and during the monsoon, so please confirm before you travel.
What is the 22-theertham bathing ritual?
Within the Ramanathaswamy temple are 22 sacred wells (theerthams), each said to have a distinct property. Pilgrims bathe in the sea at Agni Theertham first, then have water from each well poured over them in turn by attendants. The ritual symbolises the washing away of all sins and is unique to Rameshwaram. Carry an extra set of dry clothes.
How do I reach Rameshwaram, and what is the Pamban bridge?
Rameshwaram sits on Pamban island, reached across the sea by the Pamban road bridge and the rail bridge from the mainland. The nearest airport is Madurai (~163 km); Rameshwaram has its own railway station. The Annai Indira Gandhi (Pamban) bridge over the sea is itself a famous sight — we arrange comfortable transfers from Madurai.
Should I also visit Dhanushkodi and Ram Setu?
Yes. About 20 km from the temple, Dhanushkodi is the “ghost town” at the very tip where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean and the shoals of Ram Setu (Adam’s Bridge) towards Lanka are visible. Nearby Gandhamadhana Parvatam bears Rama’s footprint, and the Kothandaramaswamy temple marks where Vibhishana surrendered to Rama. We can add these to your itinerary.
How do I book my Rameshwaram yatra through DharmikYatra?
There is no online checkout. Every enquiry opens a pre-filled WhatsApp chat with a real coordinator at +91 92203 52244, or you can email dharmikyatra@dharmikvibes.com. We arrange darshan, the 22-theertham snan, Dhanushkodi, stays, travel and guides through official temple channels and quote everything transparently before you commit.
